Devices for controlling smart home concepts represent the very interfaces between the systems and their users. As an entry-level thermostat, the Nest Thermostat with its smart mode of operation is aimed to help users save energy. Following the maxim of optimum efficiency, the shape of the thermostat has been envisioned essentially as a bowl with an inset lid. The elevated lid not only works as a pleasing design detail, it also physically protects the lens and helps with manufacturing tolerances. This gives the Nest Thermostat a simple and inviting formal appearance. Complemented by extended colour options, it adopts an elegant look to harmoniously enrich interiors. The thermostat has also been thoughtfully designed for easy disassembly. Made of fewer parts and lighter than the predecessor thermostat model, it uses 49 per cent post-consumer recycled resin for its plastic parts, including the internals. The Nest Thermostat offers highly advanced operability by allowing users to interact with it naturally through an intuitive up and down swipe control. Supported by a radar chip, it also impresses with its intelligent motion detection. For example, the current temperature is thus immediately displayed as soon as the user approaches the device. The Nest Thermostat is easy to program and offers a wide range of energy-saving options through features such as the Savings Finder.
Statement by the Jury
With a focus on efficient energy saving, the Nest Thermostat has been coherently developed to fit into the line of Google products. Convincingly implemented are design aspects such as the display, which is perfectly embedded into the elegant enclosure with its soft-looking finish. The thermostat not only emotionalises users with its appealing language of form and interactive capabilities, it also aestheticises the smart home sector with its easy programmability.
