Monolithic simplicity

Compared to cell production in large steel tanks, small-scale cultivation offers the advantage of much faster and more controlled biochemical reactions. The S.NEST microbioreactor enables laboratory personnel to maximise cell yield while managing and monitoring processes at all stages. This technically sophisticated system allows for a fully integrated design that could hardly be more minimalist and which conveys aesthetic clarity and intuitive use. As the device is operated via computer software, the designers were able to dispense with any physical control elements, and processes can be controlled and visualised remotely from any location. Thanks to the monolithic shape, which is underscored by the white colour scheme, the reactor appears futuristic and functional. The smooth surface is broken up by a discreet groove that visually separates the two functional zones for the observer. The upper half contains four incubation chambers, which can hold cell-culture plates with 24 or 96 liquid trays. The chamber compartments open via a touch mechanism and are thus easily accessible. The environmental factors and mixing rate can be set individually for each chamber. The lower section contains a concealed motion camera module that scans each sample individually and records the metrics in real time so that cell status can be monitored with precision.

Statement by the Jury

Designed in the shape of a monolith, the S.NEST microbioreactor impressively demonstrates the successful combination of technology and style. The visual appearance is eye-catching yet subtle, and skilfully emphasises the progressive nature of the system in terms of both efficiency and ease of use. Cell cultivation and real-time monitoring form a coherent whole within the design and ensure a fully integrated workflow.
