Illan
Appreciating the moment
Illan is a suspension lamp that has emerged as the result of an intensive research on materials and methods of laser cutting. The lampshade is made from light and thin plywood with a thickness of 1 to 2.5 mm, which is cut using an innovative laser technique. The cutting motif of simple concentric circles turns the wood into a sculptural three-dimensional object that takes on form and volume only upon installation. Floating in mid-air, the distinctive shape lends it a flexible and translucent character. As the material reacts to the slightest of airflows, it starts to vibrate in a delicate wave-like movement. The interplay with warm LED light underlines the atmospheric and ambient effect of Illan because the emitted light is continuously diffused to changing effects by the thin vibrating wood slats. In addition to this appealing effect, the project realises an ecologically responsible approach, which is already evident in the use of sustainably grown wood and the use of LED as the light source. Moreover, the number of components has been reduced to a minimum and all parts can be easily separated for correct disposal. The lamp is easily shipped in a flat, non-unfolded form.
Statement by the Jury
The Illan suspension lamp inspires with its aesthetically appealing appearance, which was facilitated by an innovative use of technology and material. The delicate movements of the slats create a fascinating interaction with the diffuse light and bathe the room in a pleasant ambiance.
