Historical Illustration
Hands
“Hands” is based on the invention of adhesive bandages, which were developed by Earle Dickson in 1920. His wife often cut or burnt herself while cooking. He would prepare some gauze which she could apply herself. This thoughtful aspect of the invention is reflected by the bright colours of the illustration. It is dominated by warm, human flesh tones, used not only for the hands themselves but also for the kitchen setting. The close-up of the hands looks intimate and also creates an image of self-care as the bandage allows people to treat themselves instead of needing the help of someone else.
