International competition for design concepts
The Red Dot Award: Design Concept was launched in 2005 with the aim of recognising innovative design concepts that pave the way for tomorrow’s extraordinary products. Over the years, the competition has become an important platform for recognising outstanding design projects at various stages of development, from concepts and prototypes to market-ready products.
Two types of design concepts are eligible for the award: “concepts” and “ready to launch” products. This distinction allows the jury to apply appropriate criteria in the evaluation - in terms of design characteristics and marketability.
Concepts include any kind of invention, new design, architecture, installation and communication design that will not be mass produced before 2 June 2024. The designs that are “ready to launch”, i.e. ready for the market, are almost or already fully developed as a product or service. A market announcement may already have been made, but the products will also not be available before 2 June 2024.
Premium award - the Red Dot: Luminary
The highest distinction in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept is the Red Dot: Luminary, which is awarded to companies and designers. The winning concept is considered groundbreaking and is selected from the Red Dot: Best of the Best awards. Last year, the “Lunet” project won the competition’s highest award.
Red Dot: Next Gen Award
Young professionals and students under the age of 30 are invited to submit their design projects for the Red Dot: Next Gen Award to present pioneering design solutions.
The highest distinction in this competition category is the “Red Dot: Peter Zec Prize”. It will be awarded for the first time in 2024 and is endowed with 10,000 Singapore dollars. The prize is donated and presented by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot.
In this way, the international design award recognises, promotes and inspires the next generation of design professionals.
Winners’ Benefits
Whether already a professional or still a student, all winners of the competition receive the benefits that come with successful participation. They will receive the internationally recognised Red Dot label, certificates and an invitation to the awards ceremony where the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best awards will be presented. All winning design concepts will be published in the yearbook and presented in the online exhibition on the Red Dot website and in the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore.
