Red Dot Award: Product Design 2023
Red Dot Gala at the Essen Opera House
First up was the ceremonial presentation of the Red Dot Trophies to the winners of the competition’s highest distinction, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. The Red Dot Gala was hosted by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot. Together with the jurors Mårten Claesson, Adriana Monk and Gordon Bruce, he handed over the coveted trophies.
The Red Dot CEO sums up the event: “The Red Dot Gala marks a special moment on the day of the awards ceremony. Designers are rarely honoured for their achievements. Often they are more active in the background for a brand, but work on products that accompany us all in our daily lives. To receive an award for that is already great class. To then be able to step onto a big stage and receive applause for what they have created is truly extraordinary. To accompany this moment is a great joy. I thank our participants for putting their trust in us and allowing us to create these special moments together.”
Nico Gerstmayer and the Aalto Ballet showed off their performance skills on stage. Gerstmayer played the piece “Attraction” by Emmanuel Séjourné on the Adams Alpha Marimba, which won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2023. The Aalto Ballet provided entertainment with scenes from the piece “Mutual Comfort” by Edward Clug.
Honorary titles for Hiroshi Ishibashi and Logitech Design
Recognising and promoting the value of design – Japanese Hiroshi Ishibashi dedicated his entire career to this goal. In around 40 years, Ishibashi founded several companies and opened the Artizon Museum in 2020. For his commitment to the promotion of design, Hiroshi Ishibashi was honoured with the Red Dot: Personality Prize in 2023. The award ceremony took place a few weeks ago in Japan. The award was celebrated on a grand scale during the Red Dot Gala.
Alastair Curtis, Logitech’s Chief Design Officer, also accepted a special award: The traveling “Radius” trophy was passed on to Logitech Design this year. This means they can now officially call themselves Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2023. “Over the past few years, Alastair Curtis and his team have made a transformation in an already established and successful company that has elevated Logitech from a tech brand to a design brand, making the company even better known internationally. This dedication to design and constant work to create exceptional products is being recognised this year with the honorary title of ‘Red Dot: Design Team of the Year’. My sincere congratulations on this achievement,” congratulates Peter Zec.
Designers’ Night at the Red Dot Design Museum – vernissage, party and beer garden
After the gala, the party continued into the early hours of the morning at the Red Dot Design Museum. In high summer temperatures, the beer garden was in particular demand, but also the dance floor, where DJ CHRISSI D additionally heated up the party-loving guests.
During the after-show party, the winners also had the opportunity to discover their award-winning products in one of the three special exhibitions in the museum. They were thus the first guests to visit “Milestones in Contemporary Design” and “Design on Stage”. The third exhibition is specially created by the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year and is entitled “Defy Logic”.
Away from the party hustle and bustle, the award-winning vehicles were on display, exclusively for the evening of the awards ceremony. Among them were the Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo, smart #1 and Toyota Prius models. An exceptionally large agricultural machine also attracted a lot of attention: the AMAZONE Pantera 7004, a self-propelled field sprayer. Guests were able to admire the vehicle with its impressive boom extending over 36 meters in front of the Red Dot Design Museum.
