Powerful and Precise

Compared to lightweight robots, whose reach is roughly equivalent to that of a human arm, and who can lift around 15 kg, heavy-duty robots are the powerhouses among industrial robots. They can manoeuvre hundreds of kilos of heavy workpieces or lift and transport large components with ease. The KR 500 FORTEC-2 by German automation corporation and robot manufacturer KUKA is no different. Owing to its extremely robust design and powerful drives, the robot can manage workpieces with payloads of up to 500 kg – and do so quickly and precisely. Its repeat accuracy of 0.08 mm means it is exactly what is needed when precision work on heavy loads is required. The KR 500 FORTEC-2 can also move workpieces with a range of up to 3.7 metres; linear rails can be added to extend the work area. With its agility and compact shape, the robot’s strength can be deployed even in the smallest of spaces for a variety of applications. These qualities also won over the jury. “The KUKA KR 500 FORTEC-2 heavy-duty robot redefines usability and precision in an industrial setting and demonstrates innovation in both design and technology. Its compact design and optimised structure offer a perfect fusion of power and mobility.” Indeed, the KR 500 FORTEC-2 unmistakably radiates concentrated energy but also the nimbleness of an athlete. The organically fashioned, robust components and flowing shape transitions were designed for the largest possible torsion-resistant strength as the robot has to withstand a tremendous flux. At the same time, the interaction of the appendages and joints gives it a lively appearance, invariably bringing to mind muscle power. The heavy-duty robot by KUKA furthermore proves to be extremely versatile and can be used for a wide range of applications. There is a version for heavy payload milling and another for mega and giga casting tasks, to name but a few.
