RAN

“RAN” is based on the eponymous film by Akira Kurosawa. The interactive scratchboard illustrations reinterpret the dramatic story and the philosophical spirit of the samurai. The characters, clothing, sets and battle scenes are all remarkably realistic in their representation and rich in detail. All drawings are in shades of black, white and grey. The signal colour red is used to accentuate expressive highlights and thus gives the illustrations an additional sense of drama. In combination with haunting sounds, the scenes exert a strong pull which is difficult to resist.
