NOM (Nature of Material)
The art of origami looks back at a hundred-year-old tradition in Asia. The skilful folding of paper transforms it into two- and three-dimensional sculptures of authentic appearance. This art served as a source of inspiration for the NOM (Nature of Material) furniture series. The concept of the project was to lend the geometrically straight contours of origami-like folds a more natural appearance. This design goal was able to be realised thanks to an innovative approach in the machine processing of aluminium. Each piece of furniture is created by first laser-cutting it from a folded spread of aluminium sheeting, which is then shaped using a bending mould to give it its final form. The distinctive characteristics of these furniture pieces are achieved by creating the legs in a meticulously planned processing step. They are folded in such a manner that the upper surface of the aluminium corpus can “react” naturally to the stretching and bending act. This effect lends the NOM pieces their unusual upholstery-like and soft appearance that immediately captivates the beholder. The tables and stools of this series are suitable for all living areas. They are stackable, very light and lend themselves to arrangement in groups. They turn into eye-catchers in any space, enhancing it with their strong visual expressivity.
심사평
Based on a ground-breaking new idea, this series of furniture pieces made of aluminium resulted in objects of impressive beauty. The art of origami inspired and was transformed in a process that lends aluminium a strikingly organic and natural appearance. The NOM tables and stools are elegant and fascinate with both their construction and their soft-looking surfaces.
