Besides study programmes in fashion, computer science and business administration, the Ling Tung University, founded in 1964, also teaches design and promotes young creative talents. Yu-Jing Weng, Ru-Yun Li, Xin-Ting Ke, She-Fan Yen and Wei-Jing Xie study here together and, with an excellent project about tiny creatures, draw attention to a special creation of nature.
Interview with Ling Tung University
Red Dot: In your work, you have explored different species of fireflies and presented this diversity in an illustrative manner. How did this very special choice of subject matter come about? What fascinated you so much about fireflies?
Ling Tung University: Our team was deeply touched by the breathtaking spectacle that surrounded us during our firefly-watching tour. With our design, we want to convey the emotions and awe that this experience of watching fireflies triggered and enable others to understand and feel the same sense of wonder and inspiration.
What technique did you use to create the detailed illustrations?
Inspired by the trajectory of fireflies, we used intricate lines from digital art as the main visual and chose rough brushes to add the hand-drawn illustrations. The large size of the design is intended to contrast with the actual size of the fireflies and reveal largely unnoticed details of the limbs. In addition, sketching techniques were used in the three-view illustrations to simulate a realistic appearance.
You used fluorescent printing ink for the accompanying poster. What conceptual role do materiality and haptics play in your work?
During our research, we discovered the unique texture of fireflies’ elytra wings. Therefore, we decided to enrich the reading experience with tactile impressions. To simulate the glow and real haptic feel of fireflies, we mixed luminescent pigments with fluorescent powder for printing, bringing out the grainy texture of the elytra wing surface.
How would you define the role of the designer in society? Do you have a design philosophy yourself?
We believe that design is a part of life and that designers play a crucial role in enriching our lives. Design makes the ordinary unique and brings more colour into our lives.
